Q&A: Are any of these questions about Collins submarine software well-posed?

Question by Scrambled egg Brain: Are any of these questions about Collins submarine software well-posed?
1/ Were these recurring question : Who misspelt “Collin’s” ?, Who create the email address for the “Deputy Directors” ?

2/Were the phenomena that were observed an artefact of the experimental apparatus ?

3/Were problems caused by “the personal failings of a troubled and deluded, but also manipulative individual, and the willingness of others to be drawn in to his misfortunes” ?

4/Are you trying to set things up to run without intervention -? (All very admirable- but you probably have intervened already and you’re probably impeding your staff from taking corrective action).

5/ Was Oberon software section leader NOT using the intended “level 2″ system to develop
software ? Was Oberon software section leader NOT using the methodology developed by Robert Clark ? Was Oberon section leader winging it and claiming to be following standards but essentally backfilling documentation to “comply” with standards ?

6/Did codename “Kensington” authorize a “test” to check that the fire door from Building 51 could be opened ? Did “Kensington” authorize the release of other systems in this fashion : Repeat the test until it eventually works, then sign the test off as done ?

7/At one stage, a fire engine was arriving at building 51 each morning a part of a test. What was that all about ? Was the whole organization in disarray ?

8/Would basic investigative skills, the same sort of skill you’d need for example to investigate Rachelle Childs’ morder, be valuable, for a project like Collins software ? Why not bring good investigators on board the project ?

9/ Does karma seek out flawed individuals ? Is it a “quantum electrodynamics” phenomenon ?

10/ Are these events significant :
After a lunch, Millington left the bbq on Jack’s desk. Does that send a message about quality ?
What was SCTT move to Building 51 all about ?
Why was SCTT torn down ?
When Plats was wound down was lots of expertise lost ? What was that all about ?
Did the system start to get a feel like Westgate Bridge – bolts being pulled out resulted in the whole thing falling down – the system was destroyed during its construction ?
Alex Krenzel said in December 1993 that a tiny mistake had been made, so “we might get something by 2000 (as opposed to 1993)”. What was that all about ?

11/Who might we ask “Tell us a bit about yourself” so as to shed light on the project ?

12/Is there an inverted pyramid ? People are paid monopoly money to make decisions without evidence. This eats away at the soul.

13/What IS the Singer Librascope design philosophy ? Wouldn’t this be (partly) stated in documents produced by overseas liason team(s) ? Did anyone read such documents and apply the philosophy ?

14/ Was it essential to have a simulator that could simulate the trials at sea of several version of software ?

15/ Did anyone ask people on the ground what they thought ?

16/Were there reference models for 117 Oberon system ? Would these models allow an automated demonstration that all is well with the developing Collins system ?

17/Would there be key factors for success for each Collins subsystem ? If some of the key factors for success are lost, won’t the project seem like it is hurtling backwards in top gear ?

18/Were improvements to Oberon or Collins methodology long lasting ?

19/Do people need tools so that by going about their normal routine, quality is achieved ?

20/Was there a nightmare of inability ?

21/Was all revealed at the “last day at SWSC” ? “The Americans had never seen anything like it”.

22/Do some people have a personality disorder – call meetings with no agenda, or if there is an agenda they depart from it?

A Little Yellow Submarine Makes Big Waves

So it was with Sir Paul McCartney back in 1966 when struck with the idea for a children’s song about submarines.

In the beginning, the happy tune, written for Ringo Starr, encompassed many different colored submarines. However, as it evolved, the list narrowed to the color yellow. No particular reason was ever revealed for the change, but it doesn’t really matter now does it? Yellow is happy, it’s sunny, and it brought more fame and popularity to this old wartime vessel.

After the vocals for the chart topping hit were recorded, the studios cupboards and drawers were pilfered to find items that would make great sound effects. Some items that were used – chains, a ship’s bell, tap dancing mats, whistles, hooters, a tin bath filled with water, wind and thunderstorm machines, and a cash register. To help with the special effects, John Lennon blew through a straw into a pan of water to create a bubbling effect, both men talked through tin cans to create the sound of the captain’s orders, and chains were twirled in a tin bath tub to create water sounds.

The quirky tune was a hit. The single went to #1 on every major British chart, remained at #1 for four weeks and charted for 13 weeks. It won an Ivor Novello Award for the highest certified sales of any single issued in the UK that year. After much success was found in the song, producers were in hot pursuit to make a movie based on its’ lyrics. The Yellow Submarine animated film came out in 1968, to much acclaim. This, even with the Beatles only appearance to be a cameo in the closing scenes. Most assuredly it was aimed at an audience of children. However, viewers of all ages flocked to see it; more likely for the sounds than anything else. Since the sixties, the song and the movie have both become classics.

Classics to the point of a yellow submarine being erected outside of John Lennon Airport in Liverpool, and to the point of model yellow submarines being made by children of all ages the world over.

With a model you can make yourself, you can have your own piece of the phenomenon that is the Yellow Submarine. Building a model submarine of the cheery sort can be enjoyed by anyone of any age, as kits are available to make it an easy task. Hop on board and join the fun! You just might embark on a new hobby!

Q&A: Which summary summarises Collins submarine software’s problems ?

Question by workplace psychopath: Which summary summarises Collins submarine software’s problems ?
Answerer 1
You mightn’t get an answer because people are “beholden” to others.
Someone saved you from a predicament, so as far as you’re concerned they’re Jesus Christ,
even though they’re only human and perhaps deeply flawed, and misbehaving in the workplace.

Answerer 2
Who was propagating massive dysfunctionality ?

Well who cancelled the surface boat, and the two sailors drowned ?

Who tried to downgrade Sherro’s position ?

I was sitting in a toilet cubicle wiping my bum and I heard someone say “We’re having a lunch for Anna today. She’s leaving. She was unsuitable.” Who was saying that ?

Who cancelled the planned two years of integrated development of Collins software and land based test site software ?

Who cancelled Don Cabral’s “reliability improvement program”.

Whose idea was “1.5″ software ? 1.5 software would inevitably have been a very poor quality hack of 2.0 software.

What happened to Robert Clark’s EH84 fortran and pascal models ? These could have been used to integrate the system ?

What happened to Robert Clark’s EH84 fortran and pascal models ? These could have been used to integrate SCTT system.

What happened to Robert Clark’s EH84 fortran and pascal models ? These could have been used to make SCTT interoperable with Collins landbased test site.

Why was SCTT not USED to informally integrate Collins software ?

Was much of the massive dysfunctionality “modified limited hangout” ?

Answerer 3
Some problems might have been caused by skipped tests and assumptions.

Answerer 4
The project is gonna be like Wayne Gardner trying to hand over the controls (of his bike) to someone who has parachuted in. Of its nature, the project is gonna be difficult.

Answerer 5
Who was caused problems and what problems were caused ?

Subrata Maitra was caused problems. (His home phone was receiving menacing phone calls. Whether related to this or not, he obtained extended leave.) He was ordered back to work, told he would have no job if he didn’t come back. He chose to remain in his new job he had moved to.

Patrick O’Sullivan was caused problems. O’S was an elite squash player. Unsurprising that he palyed squash with the Captain of the navy base where he worked. The captain asked him about work and he answered. Was hauled over the coals by DSL for what he said to the captain.
It’s most unfortunate that two sailors were drowned around this time. If people had concentrated on doing the job, instead of harrassing O’S, the sailors mightn’t have drowned.

CMDR Peter Campbell witnessed some CSC software tests and said they were very disappointing.
Peter Voss later witnessed some CSC tests. When Voss gave a similar report Voss was hauled over the coals by the red-hair ITT&T LCDR Bob C.(Some involvement of DSL)

Antony Pahl was falsely accused of poor-quality work. Implicated are D.S., KRJ. Result is that AP left, greatly diminishing the capability of the directorate. Probably a good result for his familiy – he could spend more time with them. (Some involvement of DSL)

Answerer 6
Sherro was NOT causing problems.
Ask who opposed Sherro. Look no further.

Answerer 7
What massive dysfunctionality was DS propagating ?

What massive dysfunctionality was DSL propagating ?

What massive dysfunctionality was KRJ propagating ?

Who was propagating massive dysfunctionality ?

Answerer 8
Those dishing out blame are gonna be suspect.

Answerer 9
So : Who would have been beholden to who ?
And : Were DS, DSL, KRJ, part of the problem or part of the solution ?

Answerer 10
Looks likely massive dysfunctionality was being propagated, for someone’s base purposes, and the dysfunctionality was causing the problems.

Does buying a Rolex watch which is going out of production really worth a buy and willl be a collectors item?

Question by fnchangezi: Does buying a Rolex watch which is going out of production really worth a buy and willl be a collectors item?
I am buying a Rolex submarine 1460M but the salesman told me that this model is going out of production as its a very late model. then showed me another model of the submarine with the date and with a 20% higher price and said anydays i will buy this watch. I am just confused as to which watch to buy I think the rolex going out of production will be worth it…

Answer by Superdog
Rolex hold their value well. But, only if you have them regularly cleaned and serviced at a registered Rolex service point (and logged on to the service card) which can cost you around US$ 400 a time. However, as a real investment, you would need to wait upwards of 30 years and basically keep it in its box during all the time so as to maintain its pristine quality.

Would you ever build your own Submarine, and Dive in it?

Question by oysterStar: Would you ever build your own Submarine, and Dive in it?
Does anybody have the capability to build their own real submarine, and then actually dive in it. Not too long ago, three men in New York tried to make a civil war version that freaked the authorities out, thinking floating mine.

I notice there are many plans for building your own, that can handle short depths and sails. Ironically, many of the U-Boat historians have full mock plans to build anything from the late two man models to the early ship like vessels that would require a crew to operate.

Back when we were kids, I remember we tried to build a cat submarine. It didn’t work out too well. The cat scratched at the sides, and imploded it under water, at the bottom of our pool. Cat just got wet, nothing bad happen to mittens on that voyage. We also made an ant colony that survived four weeks under water, with plants for air. That was kind of cool. The seals broke apparently after water-logging or pressure finally getting to them, and they all drown.
